How does music therapy work in dementia?

Music activates extensive brain networks — including those that are affected late in dementia. This makes it a particularly effective approach for people living with dementia.

Music therapists use familiar songs, rhythm, improvisation, and active music-making to engage emotional, cognitive, and social resources. Therapy is individually tailored — the person's biography, musical preferences, and current state are central.
