The workshops are conducted in German / Die Workshops finden auf Deutsch statt. German language skills are required to participate.
Your voice is the most powerful tool you have
Your baby can hear you — right now. From around 24 weeks of pregnancy, your baby perceives sounds, and your voice is the most familiar of all. Humming, murmuring, singing — it sounds simple because it is simple. No musical background required.
In our project MSB (Musically Supported Bonding) we explore how three workshops can strengthen the bond between you and your unborn child. Scientifically guided, free of charge, and in a small, safe setting.
What to expect — 3 Saturdays, 90 minutes each
All three sessions take place on Saturdays from 10:30 to 12:00. There are two weeks between each session — enough time to try out what you've learned in everyday life.

Arriving & Discovering
We get to know each other, and you get to know your voice. Toning, humming, droning — and a first bonding song: Thula Baba, a lullaby from South Africa. No prior experience needed.
Before the session: two short questionnaires on prenatal bonding and musical activity (approx. 10 min.).
Homework: Listen to music you enjoy — pick one song to bring next time.

Your song — your voice
You bring your personal song. We sing, hum and vocalise together — and you discover how lullabies come to life and what makes them work.
Homework: Sing to your baby — in whatever way feels right to you.

Bonding through voice
A shared closing: how can what you've learned live on in daily life? What helps during restless moments, at bedtime, during nappy changes?
After the session: the same two questionnaires again (approx. 10 min.) — plus a short qualitative interview (approx. 30 min.) where your experiences become part of the research.
Who is this for?
You're a great fit if …
- ✓You are between 12 and 26 weeks pregnant
- ✓You have a physiological (uncomplicated) pregnancy
- ✓You speak German
- ✓You are curious about your voice and music
Please note:
We specifically enrol women from week 12 onwards, so that the most intensive phase of pregnancy (weeks 32–40) can be spent fully at home. This project is not a therapy programme — it is a research format. You are the expert on your own body.
Who are we?

We are four music therapy students — Mark, Lena, Megi and Carlotta. We are studying Music Therapy (Bachelor) in our 4th semester at MSH Medical School Hamburg. This project is part of our academic training — we are very happy to welcome every participant.

Scientific background
MSB (Musically Supported Bonding) is a pilot study investigating music therapy interventions for promoting prenatal bonding. We use two validated questionnaires — the Maternal Antenatal Attachment Scale (MAAS; Condon, 2015; Lehnig et al., 2024) and a musical activity scale (based on Politimou et al., 2018) — along with qualitative interviews following the third session.
Our research question: How does the three-stage MSB intervention promote the active use of voice and the bond between expectant parents and their unborn child?
